On Sunday, Auburn University announced they would be parting ways with head coach Gus Malzahn after 8 seasons.

This decision comes as a bit of a surprise after a win over Mississippi State last night 24-10 and finishing the season 6-4. Malzahn finished his career in Auburn with a record of 68-34. In 2013, Auburn would have a National Championship appearance and also competed in 2 other New Years Six bowl games.

Malzahn finished his SEC career with a record in the conference of 39-27, but the big record is 3-5 against Alabama head coach Nick Saban in 8 Iron Bowl matchups and 1 of only 2 SEC coaches with a win over Saban led teams. The one glaring statistic is Malzahn's record away from Jordan Hare Stadium against Alabama, LSU and Georgia going winless against those 3 teams in his career on the road (0-12).

“After evaluating the state of the Auburn football program, we’ve decided that it was time to make a change in leadership,” athletics director Allen Greene said. “We appreciate everything that Gus did for the program over the last eight seasons. We will begin a search immediately for a coach that can help the Auburn program consistently compete at the highest level.”

Auburn will now look to hire their 28th head coach in school history, but for the rest of this season Auburn defensive coordinator Kevin Steele will take over as interim head coach.

“Coach Malzahn led the Auburn football program with honor and integrity,” University President Jay Gogue said. “We appreciate his service to Auburn Athletics, Auburn University and, in particular, our student-athletes. We wish him and Kristi all the best.”
