An Aliceville man died Thursday evening after he crashed his car while reportedly running from the Tuscaloosa Police Department.

Captain Jack Kennedy, the commander of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, said a patrol officer attempted to stop a vehicle "for several traffic violations" on Cousette Street in Tuscaloosa at about 7 p.m.

Kennedy said the driver, identified as 31-year-old Jaylen Reed of Aliceville, fled immediately at high speed, crossing several intersections before striking a ditch and a culvert near Tamko Building Products.

Kennedy said police found the lone occupant, Reed, badly injured and unresponsive. Medical aid was rendered until Reed could be taken to DCH Regional Medical Center, where he died.

Kennedy said no other vehicles were involved, struck or damaged in the crash, but because it arose out of a Tuscaloosa Police stop, it will be investigated by Violent Crimes Unit investigators who are not affiliated with TPD, such as sheriff's deputies or Northport officers.

Kennedy said multiple witnesses and sources of video have been obtained, and they show the deadly crash happened less than 30 seconds after the TPD unit turned on their police lights for the stop.

Reed was later found to have multiple active felony warrants, Kennedy said.
