Alabama Seeks Another Win as Beat Auburn, Beat Hunger Food Drive Returns

Students at the University of Alabama will look for a back-to-back win over their in-state rivals as the annual Beat Auburn, Beat Hunger food drive returns for the 30th year this week.

The donation drive, which was first conceived in 1994, pits students at both schools against each other in friendly competition and has raised more than 8 million pounds of food for families in need across the state.

“Food insecurity in Alabama remains a prominent issue with 1 in 7 people being classified as food insecure,” said Rebecca Wilson, president of Beat Auburn Beat Hunger. “Beat Auburn Beat Hunger raises food and monetary donations for the West Alabama Food Bank with each donation helping to feed those in need, who may rely on our drive to feed themselves and their families.”

Except in 2021, Alabama has won the competition annually since 2017. Last year was a record-setter for the campaign, and Alabama won the contest by donating 565,983 pounds of food to the West Alabama Food Bank.

The 2023 drive officially begins on both campuses this Friday, and representatives and mascots from both schools will meet with Gov. Kay Ivey in Montgomery on Monday for a kickoff event on the steps of the state capitol.

Donation barrels will be stationed across campus and the city of Tuscaloosa, so community members can join UA students and faculty in this important charity effort.

“It is not just our members or campus who aid in our fundraising,” said Wilson. “We rely on the support of our entire community, as well as Crimson Tide fans from across the nation. Please consider supporting BABH, as we seek to fight food insecurity and beat Auburn.”
