If Republican Tommy Tuberville and Democrat Doug Jones win their respective party primaries next spring, the battle for governor will be between Alabama's last two U.S, Senators. Jones announced his campaign for governor this afternoon, hours after filing campaign papers with the Secretary of State’s Office in Montgomery.

Jones is getting a reputation for being an alternative candidate to derail the election of a popular Republican in a bright "Red" state. Jones thwarted the expected election of former Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore in a special U.S. Senate election in 2017. His election was aided by allegations from multiple women that Moore assaulted them when they were teenagers flipping the script and giving Jones a 21,924-vote victory.

“I am running for governor of Alabama,” Jones said in a campaign video posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), “Folks in Alabama deserve a governor who is going to fight for them," he stated.

“What we have heard all along is that Alabama wants their next governor to be someone who lives here, who works here, who listens to the people of this state, who understands the people of this state. And Alabama wants their next governor to be someone who treats this state with grace and dignity and not just like a rest stop on the way to the Florida beach,” Jones reference was to allegations that Tuberville does not live in Alabama.

Democrats have been urging the lawyer and former U.S. attorney to run for weeks. Other than his one term in the U.S, Senate, Jones is best known for prosecuting two Ku Klux Klansmen responsible for Birmingham’s infamous 1963 church bombing when he was a federal prosecutor.

If they each win their primaries, they will meet head-to-head for the second time this decade. As the last Democrat to hold statewide office in Alabama, Jones lost his senate reelection bid to Tuberville by almost a half million votes in 2020.

Tuberville spokesperson Mallory Jaspers told Newsweek: “Last time Doug Jones ran against Coach Tuberville, it didn’t go well for Doug."

Tuberville, who is good friends with President Trump, is expected to get massive backing from the White House.

The party primary elections are scheduled for May 2026 with the General Election next November.
