Investigators in Tuscaloosa have charged a 25-year-old with capital murder after a Sunday afternoon shooting left one person dead and another injured.

Captain Jack Kennedy, the commander of the multi-agency Violent Crimes Unit, said police were called to Sun Valley Apartments on 36th Avenue East Sunday around 2 p.m. after residents there reported a shooting.

One man, 35-year-old Justin Lanier Douglas, had been shot and was taken to DCH Regional Medical Center, where he died later Sunday.

Another person was wounded, and a Tuscaloosa Police said earlier Sunday that their wounds did not appear to be life-threatening.

Kennedy said the TPD officers who were first to the scene had "an excellent response" and were able to contact witnesses and identify suspects with whom the VCU followed up.

After searching multiple locations, seizing evidence and interviewing witnesses, investigators have charged 25-year-old Devonte Montel Hinton with capital murder.

He was booked in the Tuscaloosa County Jail, where he will be held without bond. If convicted of capital murder, only two legal outcomes are possible for Hinton -- life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty.

Kennedy said the investigation is ongoing and more arrests are possible.

Anyone who has any information regarding this incident or any of the suspects involved are urged to contact the Violent Crimes Unit at (205) 464-8690 or the Tuscaloosa Police Department at (205) 349-2121.
