Police Chase Through Tuscaloosa County Reaches 130 MPH Monday

A police chase that tore through all of Tuscaloosa County Monday afternoon saw speeds around 130 miles per hour, according to a Tuscaloosa Police Department spokeswoman.

Stephanie Taylor, TPD's public information officer, said dispatchers were contacted Monday afternoon and asked to assist the 17th Judicial Circuit Drug Task Force with a pursuit that began in Greene County.

A TPD officer spotted the vehicle heading east on I-20/59 and began following the suspect.

Taylor said the suspect got off the interstate at Exit 79 in Cottondale and fled on Highway 11 toward Five Points before turning onto Skyland Boulevard and getting back on the interstate at Exit 77.

Taylor said officers estimate the suspect vehicle exceeded speeds of 130 miles per hour at one point during the chase on the interstate.

The driver allegedly made a u-turn on I-20 and began heading west for some time before turning around again and fleeing eastward. TPD officers and Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's deputies pursued him to the eastern edges of the county and notified Jefferson County law enforcement agencies around 5:16 that the pursuit would soon enter their jurisdiction.

Taylor said local officers and deputies discontinued their chase near Exit 100 as the driver fled out of Tuscaloosa County.
