Two people were seriously injured in the accident and taken to DCH Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Around 9:15 that night, Keith Carpenter, the assistant chief of the Northport Police Department, said he could confirm one of the victims succumbed to their injuries.

Carpenter was unable to provide more details Sunday, but a second source familiar with the details of the situation said the victim who died was 21 years old. The second victim, who is reportedly 15, was airlifted to Birmingham in critical condition.

The wreck closed all lanes of Highway 43 for much of the evening as NPD's accident reconstruction unit investigated the scene, but the road reopened shortly after 9 p.m.
