Why You Won’t See James Spann On the Air Tonight
After the word got out about him missing an episode of the weekly WeatherBrains podcast, well-respected meteorologist James Spann provided an update to his health via social media Tuesday morning.
"I prefer for all of the posts on this page to be about you, and not me. Things that are helpful and relevant to you," Spann wrote from his hospital bed at Grandview Medical Center.
"Will make a quick exception here since the word is out… I missed WeatherBrains last night due to severe abdominal pain, and wound up going through a quick middle of the night surgery.
"It was a closed loop bowel obstruction, which came out of nowhere. But all is well and I will be back at full speed in a few days. Thanks to everyone at Grandview for their kindness and professionalism in the middle of the night. And, we are enjoying the 'grand view'…."
Spann has served and informed Alabamians for decades since getting his start in radio at Tuscaloosa's WTBC in the early '70s. Away from the cameras and microphones, he continues his work in the state's communities each day by holding informational sessions and appearances, such as those where he helps listeners program their weather radios to avoid missing alerts.
When back in action, those wishing to stay weather aware can hear Spann in Tuscaloosa as the chief meteorologist on 95.3 The Bear, 92.9 WTUG, Tide 100.9 | WTBC 1230 AM, 105.1 The Block, ALT 101.7, Praise 93.3, Catfish 100.1 and Nick 97.5.
See Spann each weeknight on Birmingham's ABC 33/40 at 4 p.m., 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 10 p.m.
