By the time Hurricane Isaias was downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone, more than 325,000 Alabamians and 500,000 Floridians were without power this morning. As would be expected, the bulk of the outages are concentrated along Mobile and Baldwin counties and adjoining counties, as well as the Florida Panhandle.

West Alabama has not escaped the downed trees and power lines causing outages. As of 10 a.m. Saturday, the following outages were reported in our area from Alabama Power and several electric cooperatives:

Bibb: 2,612
Fayette: 472
Greene: 445
Hale: 346
Lamar: 625
Marengo: 483
Perry: 980
Pickens: 981
Sumter: 460
Tuscaloosa: 2,638
Walker: 2,223

Total West Alabama outages: 12,265

On its outage tracker, Alabama Power, which serves the bulk of West Alabama counties, posted the following statement:

“Isaias has caused widespread power outages. We know how disruptive and frustrating it is to be without power, and we appreciate your patience as we work to get everyone back on. Even if you don’t see crews, we are checking the storm damage and clearing trees to restore power quickly and safely.”

Contract power restoration crews were brought into Alabama in the days leading up to the storm’s landfall. They were staged at various sites across the state, but could not begin power restoration operations until Isaias had safely passed the impacted areas.

As the remnants of Isaias move through northeast Alabama, emergency managers there expect more power outages this afternoon and tonight. In central and south Alabama, power crews are working around the clock to restore service.

The Alabama Emergency Operations Center cautions that some parts of central and south Alabama are very likely to have power outages lasting multiple days.
