UA Student Accused of Rape & Voyeurism, Police Seek Other Possible Victims
A University of Alabama student has been arrested and accused of photographing, filming and sexually assaulting an unconscious victim, and police say there may be others.
The suspect, 23-year-old Gambill Colvard Gentry, was arrested last Thursday and court documents outline the accusations against him so far, but to protect the identity of his alleged victims, the Thread will only report limited details.
Police received allegations earlier in July that Gentry had shared sexually explicit photos and videos that depicted a sleeping or unconscious person visibly incapable of consent.
The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit has a division that handles almost all sex crime investigations in the county, and they executed a search warrant of Gentry's phone and allegedly discovered photos and videos taken on different occasions, including text bragging about an "easy rape."
Court documents say Gentry is a Davidson, North Carolina native and a student at UA. The abuse alleged in the charges filed this week reportedly took place in Tuscaloosa, but not on the University campus.
From the evidence allegedly found on the phone, VCU investigators charged Gentry with first-degree rape, first-degree sodomy and four counts of first-degree voyeurism.
In a Monday press release, Captain Jack Kennedy, the commander of the VCU, said in addition to his arrest, Gentry has now been banned from campus.
Kennedy said evidence on the phone suggests Gentry may have had other victims.
The Violent Crimes Unit encourages anyone who believes that they may have been a victim of Gentry’s to contact the VCU at (205) 464-8690.
UPDATE: A Judge on Tuesday denied bond for Gentry.
"The Court finds there are no conditions that could assure the Court that the Defendant’s behavior could be monitored or contained in such a way to assure the victim’s safety," District Judge Joanne Jannik wrote after a hearing.
