Professional disc golf is coming to north Tuscaloosa this weekend as the Disc Golf Pro Tour closes its inaugural JomezPro Series on a course cut out of the woods near Harris Lake by a family that got tired of driving to badly kept public courses.

The JomezPro Series Finale at Cactus Rock runs this Friday through Sunday, with rounds starting at 7:55 a.m. each day. It is the first Pro Tour event the course has hosted.

Hills, Cliffs and Miles of Hiking

Cactus Rock is a beautiful but brutal course that's hard to even find off Port Mayfield Road, in rural north Tuscaloosa County where GPS apps tend to lose track of themselves.

The layout sits on steep, relentlessly hilly ground and runs long even by disc golf standards, with creeks and towering cliffs along the way.

The PDGA lists it as 18 holes, par 66, at 10,500 feet, and calls it a pro-level course that is very physically demanding, with players trekking through miles of hiking and elevation changes, sometimes across rustic bridges or up hand-hewn staircases.

The course opened in 2024 on land Nick Williams and his brothers bought after Williams grew frustrated hauling out to public courses that were not maintained.

Paul McBeth, a six-time PDGA world champion, helped designed it over roughly half a dozen visits, turning a weekend project into a championship-caliber course with funding from the property’s other owner, Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Dylan Cease, who made his first All-Star team this year.

Williams has said the long-term goal is to make Cactus Rock a regular Pro Tour stop within four or five years, likely paired with Olympus, a sister course McBeth and Cease own near Brooksville, Florida, built into a former limestone quarry.

The tournament comes with a week of events around it, including a player market and meet-and-greet at Venue Tuscaloosa with local vendors, food and drinks, putting games, meet-and-greets and live entertainment.

The finale will be played in the men’s professional division only.

The Disc Golf Pro Tour said both divisions were offered and that it did additional outreach with the DGPT player council to promote the women’s field, but that registration was not sufficient to proceed.

How to Watch, and How to Play

Coverage of JomezPro Series events runs the next day on the JomezPro YouTube channel at no cost. Live scoring is at dgpt.com and PDGA Live. Tournament tickets are at tickets.dgpt.com.

Cactus Rock is private and open on scheduled dates only, with play booked ahead. It is cash only, at $10 to play and $5 for a non-playing walker. There is no drinking water on site, and dogs are welcome on a leash.

Three sets of tees are available on normal playing days: a Shorts layout at par 63 for recreational players and two longer pro layouts.
