Tuscaloosa City Schools to Lift Mask Requirement Except on Buses
Face coverings will be optional for students, faculty and visitors at the 19 schools that make up the Tuscaloosa City Schools system when classes resume after Thanksgiving break, the system announced Friday afternoon.
All TCS schools and offices will be closed from November 22 until November 26th for the holiday. When classes resume on the 29th, masks will no longer be required at their facilities.
The only exception to the rule will be on TCS school buses, where face coverings will still be required as mandated by federal guidelines.
In an email announcing the change, TCS administrators said only .02 percent of the system's more than 10,000 students were COVID-19 positive during the last two weeks.
Earlier this year, the system's school board agreed that should their positivity rate stay below 1 percent for more than two weeks, they would remove the mask requirements that have been in place since the academic year began in August.
