Tuscaloosa City Schools, along with Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa and Child Abuse Prevention Services, will highlight and recognize Inspiring Excellence Student Of The Month from each of the 21 schools in the district during the 2023-2024 school year. Every month, two to three outstanding TCS students will be highlighted in this series.

Students trying to get a leg up on their freshman year in college took a break during their AP English class earlier this week to recognize a senior at Northridge High School known for always being willing to help.

NHS's Inspiring Excellence Student of the Month is Anushka Nichani, and her classmates, teacher, principal and family celebrated her recognition during a surprise presentation on Tuesday.

"I think it's absolutely incredible that we do stuff like this and recognize students because there are so many people out in the school who do different things but aren't necessarily recognized," the standout student said.

Nichani said she's active in as many extracurricular clubs as she can handle, serves as Class President and has also actively raised money for Children's of Alabama hospital in Birmingham as the "Jagathon" leader for Northridge Miracles.

Nichani also plays tennis for Northridge and represented the school at Girls State last fall.

"Anushka is a great example of a well-rounded student. She not only gives maximum effort in the classroom, but she also contributes significantly in her various organizations within the school," Northridge principal Jessica Williams said. "She goes out of her way to serve her school, and she always has a smile on her face. She is always willing to help her school and others, and she is a wonderful asset to our student body at NHS."
