A Sumter County man was killed and another driver was injured Friday night in a crash outside of Gainesville, Alabama, about 50 miles southwest of Tuscaloosa.

Senior Trooper Vu Quang, a spokesperson for the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency in west Alabama, said 62-year-old Carl E. Burrell was driving on Alabama Highway 39 when he collided head-on with another driver.

Burrell was in a 2004 Toyota Camry and hit a 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD shortly after 9 p.m. Both drivers were from the town of Epes in Sumter County.

Quang said Burrell's Toyota left the roadway and overturned, and that he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

He was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The other driver, 29, was injured and taken to DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa for treatment.

No other details were available when Troopers alerted media to the death on Tuesday morning.
