Tuscaloosa City Schools, along with Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa and Child Abuse Prevention Services, will highlight and recognize an Inspiring Excellence Student Of The Month from each of the 21 schools in the district during the 2023-2024 school year. Every month, two to three outstanding TCS students will be highlighted in this series.

Students at Paul Bryant High School took time out of their Friday afternoon pep rally to recognize their classmate, senior Tristan Simmons, who was honored as the school's 2023-2024 Inspiring Excellence Student of the Month.

Most of the school was packed into their auditorium for a pep rally ahead of the Stampede's Friday night clash with the Central High Falcons. Dr. Jessica Constant, TCS's coordinator for student services, said Simmons was chosen from more than 1,000 students at PBHS.

“We go around in the district and we get feedback from the school, and they nominate a student who goes over and beyond in the school and in the community," Constant said.

PBHS principal Eric Hines said Simmons was honored because he is “caring, compassionate, and always willing to help.”

Simmons is a leader in many organizations around Bryant High and is involved in robotics, their Ambassadors program, the Interact Club and the school newspaper.

“I try to lead by example,” Simmons said. “I hope that all the stuff that I am doing inspires other people, at least somewhat.”

After high school, Simmons said he plans to go to Texas A&M University to major in computer science.

Simmons was interviewed by Big Dawg Dre Day, a DJ on Townsquare Media's 105.1 the Block and 92.9 WTUG. His message will air all month on all eight of Townsquare's live and local radio stations.

“I was shocked,” Simmons said. “I didn’t expect to walk out there in front of all those people. I am really thankful.”
