SEC Partners with KINEXON For Enhanced Contact Tracing
In an effort to ensure the SEC has a full, 10-game, 2020 football season, the conference has partnered with a global technology company KINEXON to aid the conference and the universities with contact tracing.
Contact tracing has been recognized by health experts as one of the most effective ways to combat the spread of COVID-19. KINEXON has developed SafeZone technologies which consist of wearable devices called SafeTags. The devices that will be used conference wide for all student-athletes at team facilities are the size of a watch face and can be worn as a wristband or a lanyard and can also be built into player's equipment for use during practice or games.
This technology is already being used in the NFL and is being used in the SEC because of the large number of participating student-athletes playing football. The technology can determine the length of interaction between players and the proximity between individuals wearing the SafeTags.
"Through this new relationship with KINEXON, the SEC is committed to using innovative technology to provide solutions for use by our member institutions as we all work to support a healthy environment for student-athletes," said SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey. "KINEXON provides the SEC with a modern and effective solution to meet the unique contact tracing challenges associated with football."
The data is logged in a secure system and can be used to trace interactions in the event of an infection.
