At least one person is dead and several more are injured after a tornado came through Northern Hale County Thursday afternoon.

The tornado tore through the town of Sawyerville, which has a population of less than 2,000 people. Hale County EMA Director Russell Weeden confirmed that one person is dead, three people are seriously injured and four more people have been taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Weeden also said that there were several entrapments from the river area in Sawyerville all the way to County Road 50. Responders had to extricate at least three people from under a damaged mobile home.

At least 10 to 12 structures appear to be damaged or totally destroyed.
