No one was hurt in a Friday morning explosion at a Tuscaloosa refinery that a company spokesperson said caused no outside impact or threat to the public.

Matt Lambert, a spokesperson for Hunt Refining Co., told the Thread that the incident happened at their location on the Black Warrior River just south of downtown Tuscaloosa around 10 a.m. Friday.

Lambert said crews were performing a well job when a spark got into a sump area and ignited flammable vapors there.

An explosion could be felt and heard for some distance around the refinery, but Lambert said no one was hurt and there was no impact to the adjacent areas.

Lambert said crews on-site were able to extinguish the resultant fire, and a representative for the Tuscaloosa Fire Rescue service confirmed they were called to the scene but canceled en route after the situation was brought under control before fire crews arrived.
