Mother Charged with Murdering Man, Shooting Infant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama
The suspect wanted for the weekend shooting that injured an infant has been charged with Capital Murder.
Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Deputies were called at approximately 9:15 a.m. Sunday to a residence in the 4400 Block of 20th Street in Tuscaloosa on reports of a shooting.
When deputies arrived, they found Willie Haywood Jr. 53, already dead. A 2-month old infant girl had been found shot in the same area, but she was still alive.
Deputies soon detained the child's mother, Lashana Henderson, 25. At that point, the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit assumed the investigation.
Jack Kennedy, Captain of the Tuscaloosa VCU, said Henderson stated she was engaged in a domestic argument with the victim and armed herself with a pistol.
It was determined that Henderson then fired at Haywood, while he was holding the child. Both were struck, but Haywood did not survive his injuries.
The infant was transported to Children's Hospital, where she remains in critical condition.
Henderson was charged with Capital Murder for Haywood, due to the fact that he was killed in the presence of a child under the age of 14 for which he was a parent or legal guardian.
She was also charged with domestic violence assault in the first degree for causing serious injuries to the child by means of a deadly weapon.
Henderson has been committed to jail on the Capital Murder charge with no bond, and a $60,000 bond for the First Degree Assault charge.
