WAKA reports the 3-year-old came into contact with a firearm and both the toddler and the child's mother were wounded by gunfire early Monday morning.

The child did not survive and the mother was reportedly treated and released in neighboring Hale County.

Corporal Reginal King, a spokesperson for ALEA, said the State Bureau of Investigation is aiding police in Marion with an investigation at their request.

At this time, investigators do not suspect foul play and no charges have been filed.

The victims' identities have not been publicly released, and local police have asked the Marion community to keep the family in prayer.
