John Phillip Lollar (April 27, 1949 – August 16, 2026)

John Phillip Lollar, 77, of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, passed away on Sunday, August 16, 2026, at DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa.

John was born April 27, 1949, and grew up in Berry, Alabama, a place that remained close to his heart throughout his life. He spent the last several decades in Tuscaloosa, where he became deeply connected to the community.

John married Shirley on July 18, 1969. For more than 57 years, they shared a life filled with family, friendship, travel, service, and countless memories.

John was preceded in death by his father, George Thurman Lollar; his mother, Berlene Elizabeth Cole Lollar; his brothers Thurman Lollar, James Lollar and Ralph Lollar; and his sister, Rose Gaston.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Lollar; son, Zac Lollar, and his wife, Rebekah; daughter, Kylie Steiner, and her husband, Charles; and seven grandchildren, Adeline, Audrey, Alice and Anne Lollar, and Wells, Collins and Sellers Steiner. He is also survived by his brothers Charles "Hence" Lollar, Lester Terry "Bo" Lollar and Truman "Boomie" Lollar; his sister, Joann King; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members and friends.

Above all, John was a Christian and a faithful member of Northport Church of Christ.

John proudly served his country for 24 years in the Army National Guard, attaining the rank of staff sergeant and serving as a medic.

He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of West Alabama and was a graduate of the Alabama School of Banking at the University of South Alabama and the Graduate School of Banking at Louisiana State University.

Banking was John's profession for nearly 50 years, but it was also a means of building relationships, mentoring others, and serving the Tuscaloosa community. His career included First National Bank, SouthTrust Bank, Wachovia and BB&T, where he held positions including vice president.

John joined Robertson Banking Company on November 1, 2010, and was promoted to City President in March 2014. Under his leadership, Robertson's Tuscaloosa operation grew to $107 million in assets and $71 million in deposits. During the final year of his career in 2021, he focused on mentoring younger bankers and sharing the knowledge and experience he had accumulated over nearly five decades.

At the conclusion of John's career, Robertson Banking Company President and CEO William Gary Holemon reflected that John never had to wonder whether he had made a difference. He praised John's skills, experience, relationships, and lasting contributions to the bank and the Tuscaloosa community.

John's service extended far beyond banking. He was a former president of the Kiwanis Club of Tuscaloosa and volunteered with the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama, the American Heart Association, Easter Seals, the Boys & Girls Club of Tuscaloosa, and Special Olympics. He served as PTA president at Woodland Forrest Elementary School, as treasurer at both Northport and North Tuscaloosa churches of Christ, and taught young people about personal finance through Lads to Leaders.

John cared deeply about education and his community. In 2013, he ran for the Tuscaloosa City Schools Board of Education representing District 6. His campaign focused on strengthening local schools, improving graduation rates, and increasing parent and community involvement in education.

Away from work and service, John enjoyed the simple things that brought people together. He was a devoted Auburn University athletics fan and traveled to many games with his brothers, including the 2011 and 2014 national championship games. He loved 1960s music, his breakfast and lunch groups, and sharing stories about growing up in Berry.

Some of John's favorite times were spent with family and his brothers — traveling to shop for fresh fruits and vegetables, gathering around the table for Lollar family meals, or simply enjoying one another's company. He also loved traveling with his family, including memorable trips to Destin, the American West, Walt Disney World, Costa Rica, and many other places.

Those who knew John described him as gentle, kind, funny, faithful, encouraging, caring, honest, and a man of high character. His success was measured by much more than professional accomplishments or titles. John made people feel valued and supported, leaving a legacy of faithfulness, integrity, kindness, service, and love for others.

Visitation will be held Saturday, August 22, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Northport Church of Christ, 2700 44th Avenue, Northport, Alabama 35476. A Celebration of Life will follow at 11:00 a.m. Kerry Richardson and Charles Steiner will officiate.

John will be cremated, and his family will privately honor his wishes at a special place he loved in Berry.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that those wishing to honor John consider making a donation to a church or charitable organization he served during his lifetime.

The family extends its sincere appreciation to Dr. Mustafa Ahmed, Dr. Ruchit Shah and Dr. John Summerford for the care they provided John.

John will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by the many whose lives were made better simply by knowing him.
