Tuscaloosa City Schools Outline Virtual Program Status
Tuscaloosa City Schools (TCS) leadership has provided an update on the status of the potential virtual learning program for the upcoming school year. As reported by the Tuscaloosa Thread in January 2026, the school system was accepting applications from interested students and needed “at least 125 qualified students” to launch the program.
According to a TCS press release, they “will not move forward with launching its full virtual program for the 2026-2027 school year due to an insufficient number of qualifying student applicants.” However, “TCS will continue to provide virtual learning opportunities for students in specific circumstances and is working to strengthen those options moving forward.”
Eligible students in grades 10-12 who submitted applications during the January window will have the chance to join a limited full-time virtual program. Participation will be limited to 40 students per high school.

Continuing its current approach, TCD will provide expedited virtual placement for students who qualify due to disciplinary, medical, or other extenuating circumstances. The criteria and approval process for these placements will remain unchanged.
Through established platforms, students participating in virtual learning will complete their coursework via “Edgenuity, ACCESS, Dual Enrollment, and TCTA courses. These courses will not be taught by TCS teachers,” said the press release.
Ongoing efforts will focus on evaluating and refining virtual learning offerings to better meet the needs of students and families with Tuscaloosa City Schools.
