Weekend Plans for Alabamians Include Possible Damaging Winds
The National Weather Service in Birmingham has been issuing “special weather statements” this afternoon. Be sure to stay aware of gusty winds and strong thunderstorms, as wind gusts up to 40 to 50 mph are possible.
These gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects.
Residents should brace for sweltering temperatures today. A heat advisory remains in effect until 9 p.m. on Friday, August 16, for portions of Alabama. Be sure to take precautions to stay safe in the extreme heat. Click here for additional information and safety tips.
In addition to heat index values, there is a threat of damaging winds this weekend.
The National Weather Service in Birmingham said, “Several features will move through the area with thunderstorms expected each afternoon Friday through Sunday. While large hail is possible, damaging winds will be the main threat with each storm.”
The Storm Prediction Center has portions of Alabama under a “Marginal Risk” for severe weather on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
James Spann, ABC 33/40, and Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa Chief Meteorologist reminds everyone that “it won't rain everywhere today, but where storms do form, they could produce strong, gusty winds.”
