Tuscaloosa Named One Of Worst Small Cities In America

We work with this company frequently because they provide interesting facts, statistics, and studies about states and cities across America.
This one is really tough to swallow, as they base their findings on a total score that factors in affordability, economic health, education, health, quality of life, and overall safety.
As you might imagine, based on the headline, Tuscaloosa did not do very well in any of those areas.
The highest ranking was in the quality of life portion of the study, and Tuscaloosa came in 246th.
It’s hard to brag about anything when you have 245 competitors ahead of you.
The worst area for Tuscaloosa?
We ranked 1238th in America.
So you were telling me that 1237 other cities in the United States have better economic health than Tuscaloosa, Alabama?
Am I naïve?
Am I just completely missing the boat?
That does not even seem possible, much less probable.
What do I know? I’m just the reporter, and they are the experts who conducted the study.
We were not the bottom of the barrel; however, we did not do particularly well in any category, and let me give you some examples.
Gillette, Wyoming
Marshalltown, Iowa
Granite City, Illinois
and New Lenox, Illinois.
In the ranking of poverty for each community, the top cities are:
Brentwood, Tennessee
Oswego, Illinois
Westfield, NJ
New Lenox, Illinois
Southlake, Texas, has the lowest percentage of population in poverty.
The difference between the best cities and the worst cities was 35x!
The lowest city has 35 times the poverty rate of Southlake, Texas.
The only two areas that we performed well in were restaurants per capita and coffee shops per capita.
Those were also the two categories where cities in the southeast performed at least decently compared with cities in the north and on the West Coast.
