Beloved Tuscaloosa Media Personality Dies Overnight
Longtime radio and social media personality James "Captain" Ray Allen has died. The "Captain" was 75.

Allen worked at Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa for nearly a decade. The "Captain" was known for his breaking traffic reports and memorable live commercial endorsements. Allen's traffic updates were heard for many years on radio stations "95.3 The Bear", "92.9 WTUG", "101.7 The River", "105.1 The Block", "Praise 93.3/790AM" and "Tide 100.9/1230AM".
Known for his deep, gravelly voice and ongoing efforts to raise funds for his hometown of Holt, Alabama, Allen had built a following of more than 20,000 spotters and fans in West Alabama. Authorities tell us they responded to Allen's home around 5:00 am and believe he most likely passed away overnight of natural causes. Allen graduated from the University of Alabama in 1973 with a degree in broadcasting. The well-known media personality also had a brief political career, defeating Dan Morrison for the District 1 seat on the Northport City Council in 2000.
Allen also served as the vice chair of the Alabama Democratic Party in the late 1990's.
Funeral arrangements have not been released yet.
