Jahmyr Gibbs Reaches 1,000 Rushing Yards
DETRIOT- In a Thursday night showdown, the Detroit Lions improved to 11-1 for the first time in franchise history, and are the first team in the NFC to clinch a playoff spot.
With the 34-31 win, former Alabama running back Jahmyr Gibbs achieved a huge milestone, recording 1,000 rushing yards for the first time in his career. He previously recored 945 yards in his rookie season.
According to the 33rd team, achieving 1,000 yards and 5.5 or more yards per carry in a season has only been achieved by five other running backs at the age of 22 or younger. Gibbs will join Jonathan Taylor (Indianapolis Colts 2021), Adrian Peterson (Minnesota Vikings 2007), Clinton Portis (Denver Broncos 2002 & 2003), Franco Harris (Pittsburgh Steelers 1972), and Jim Brown (Cleveland Browns 1958).
Gibbs, alongside fellow running back David Montgomery, has been a dynamic duo for the Lions' offense this season, posing a formidable challenge for opposing defenses. This win also marked another historic achievement, as it is the first time in Lions' history that two running backs have each recorded 12 scrimmage touchdowns in a single season.
"Yeah, it's rare to have a combo like that. I've never had two backs that can kind of do it all- you can throw it to them, they can run between the tackles, and they can run outside the tackles. They love watching each other succeed. They can block and pass protect; they can do it all, and it’s a special combination to have for us," said quarterback Jared Goff during his Thursday Night Football postgame interview.
The Lions are known for their tough offense this season, and as the year progresses, many expect Gibbs to reach even more milestones, solidifying his status as one of the top running backs in the National Football League.
