Why Alabama is Confident in Naming Luke Metz Starter at Linebacker Beside Caleb Woodson
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- On Wednesday morning, Alabama defensive coordinator Kane Wommack named sophomore Luke Metz as a starter at inside linebacker beside Virginia Tech transfer Caleb Woodson.

"Luke Metz is really our other starter right now," Wommack told a pool of reporters on Wednesday. "But those other guys have done a really good job; I'm pleased with that room. Chuck Morrell has done a fantastic job with the development in that room. You're going to see a number of guys out there, but certainly, Luke and Caleb will be the first two out."
Kane Wommack is no stranger to successful play on defense, with the Crimson Tide fielding two top-15 defenses since Wommack arrived in Tuscaloosa two years ago. He knows a good defense plays with anticipation rather than reaction, and Luke Metz brings that to the table as fall camp wraps up this week.
"Luke’s anticipation and the confidence in being able to pull the trigger. You know - he just sees - he sees the run fits so much better right now. He’s got a little bit of a field general presence," Wommack said.
"I mean, when you watch him on game day, watch the way he communicates out there, the way he points things out, plays with anticipation. It’s the way you want a linebacker to play the game, right? The best production always comes from a defense that can anticipate what is coming next, right? And he is greatly improved in that regard. And I think we’re going to see good production because of that."
Metz played in all 15 games for Alabama as a freshman last season, spending most of his time on special teams but also seeing reps on defense. The former four-star prospect from Mill Creek High School in Georgia finished the 2025 campaign with seven total tackles.
Alabama will return to the practice field on Thursday, August 27, for the 18th practice of fall camp 2026. Alabama is scheduled to open the 2026 season at home against East Carolina on Saturday, September 5. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
