Hubbertville High School travelled to Holy Spirit for their homecoming game and delivered a resounding defeat to the Saints. The final score of 42-21 makes the game look more competitive than it was. Holy Spirit was down 35-0 at halftime and didn't pick up any ground until Hubbertville's backups were in.

Hubbertville got the scoring started on their opening drive with a 59-yard touchdown run from sophomore quarterback Timothy Keeton. Holy Spirit junior linebacker Reed Simmons blocked the ensuing point after attempt.

After Holy Spirit punted away its second possession, the Lions marched quickly down the field. Keeton delivered a 31-yard strike to senior wide receiver Jagger Youngblood for their second score of the night and senior running back Greyson Key ran the ball in for the 2-point conversion to make the score a clean 14-0.

The Saints muffed the ensuing kickoff and Hubbertville ground down the field with their bruising running attack and Key ran the ball in from seven yards out, making the score 21-0.

Following another failed attempt at putting a drive together by the Saints, Hubbertville got backed up into a 1st-and-30 situation due to a series of holding penalties, but managed to dig themselves out of the hole. After driving down to the 2-yard line, junior running back Taylor Hubbert punched it in for another score, but a missed point after attempt kept the score 27-0.

The first glimmer of hope for the Saints came when Simmons recovered a fumble at the end of a long Hubbertville run. Unfortunately, he himself coughed the ball up on the ensuing play. Hubbertville then took the ball down to the 6-yard line and Youngblood punched it in again. A successful two point conversion attempt made the score 35-0.

At halftime, Holy Spirit head coach Bobby Snyder told his team that all he wanted from them was effort. "I challenged them I said I wanted 150 yards rushing and I wanted three defensive stops," said Snyder, and the Saints managed to deliver.

Hubbertville took the opening kickoff down the field in a methodical manner with 8th grader Dakota Wakefield leading the team at quarterback. However, the Saints caught a stroke of luck on their own 36-yard line when senior William Shields picked Wakefield off.

That was a turning point for the Saints. After just a few strong rushes, senior running back Colby Phillips ran the ball in from 46 yards out to finally put them on the board.

Hubbertville took the ball down the field and scored again immediately afterwards. This time, freshman Michael Haley broke the goal line on a rush from 33 yards out. It would be the Lions final points of the night and the point after made the score 42-7.

The Saints went right back to leaning on Phillips on the next drive and he broke off yet another long run. This time, he scored from 55 yards out.

The final score of the night came with just under three minutes left on the Saints' very first play of the drive. Phillips took the ball and simply outran every single person on the field for a 72-yard touchdown.

"We had four defensive stops and 205 yards rushing. I feel like there's some carryover," said Snyder. "That's all we wanted was effort and just playing a little bit more hard nosed and I think that's what we got."

As for the Lions, coach Caleb Hands was very satisfied with his team's performance.

"I thought our guys came out and played what we call Iron Bunch football tonight," said Hynds. "You know you're going out and be tougher than the other team. They may have some good athletes on the other side, but it's a mentality thing, and it's what we've been lacking, but I got to see a little bit of it tonight so hopefully we can build on that."

Holy Spirit will host Marion County at home next week while the Hubbertville Lions travel to South Lamar to take on the Stallions.
