The signing ceremony for the 21st Century Road to Housing Act was put on hold by President Trump Wednesday as he plays hardball to get his SAVE America Act requiring proof of citizenship before voting passed in the senate.

The housing act would restrict institutional investors from buying up single-family homes. Proponents say it will make more homes available and less expensive.

The SAVE Act would create stricter voter ID laws and rules on mail-in and absentee voting. The legislation passed the house but has been stalled in the senate.

Alabama's Senior Republican U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville voted against the housing act outright. However, the state's junior GOP Senator Katie Britt backs both bills and believes both are vital.

“We want people to be able to have that piece of the American Dream,” Britt said in a press release. “That means rolling back regulations, that means creating sustainable paths to that. “I know we can continue to work both lanes at one time."

Tuberville was one of only five GOP senators who voted against the housing bill, saying it gives the federal government too much control and interferes with the free market.

Even without the signing ceremony, the housing bill will become law after 10 days unless President Trump decides to veto it.
