Helen Louise Bartee Gibson, age 98, of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, died February 4, 2025.

A private family burial will be held at Evergreen Cemetery with Tuscaloosa Memorial Chapel Funeral Home directing. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 8, 2025, at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Tuscaloosa with Brother Gary Edge officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, John Louis and Anna Martin Bartee, her husband of 48 years, Wallace B. (Bobby) Gibson, infant daughter, Georgann, son, Mark Richard Gibson, brothers, John Louis Bartee, Jr., Robert Thomas Bartee and George Henry Bartee, sister-in-law, Frances Reid Bartee, and a beloved aunt, Louise Bartee.

Survivors include her sister, Hattie Ann Morgan (James), sister-in-law, Tommie Cates Bartee; children, Robert William Gibson (Alice), Cynthia Leah Harris (Buddy), Carol Jane Lipscomb; her grandchildren, Leigh Ann Welty (Jeremy), John Michael Gibson (Sandy), Susan Elizabeth Harris Sparks, Stephen Christopher Gibson (Jennifer), Jonathan Christopher Lipscomb (April), Robert Brian Gibson (Ashley), Laura Leigh Lipscomb-Hayes, Richard Matthew Gibson (Ashley), Joseph Edward Gibson (Kristen), Rachel Louise Gibson; 16 great-grand children, 1 great-great-granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews.

Helen was born February 1, 1927, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, attended the local schools and graduated from Tuscaloosa High School in 1944. She received her undergraduate degree and Masters from The University of Alabama and served as the school librarian at Tuscaloosa Junior High School and seventh grade Tuscaloosa Middle School for 28 years. She was a long-time member of First Christian Church, where she was very involved with the Christian Women’s Fellowship and served as a Sunday school teacher, deaconess and Elder Emeritus. She enjoyed music and her time as a member of the choir.

Helen especially enjoyed her Tuesday bridge club, her monthly book club, her volunteer work, and The Crossings of North River Breakfast Club. She was a member of the Emmaus Community and the P.E.O. Sisterhood, Alabama Chapter I, and the Tuscaloosa Education Retirees Association.

Pallbearers will be Michael Gibson, Stephen Gibson, Brian Gibson, JC Lipscomb, Matt Gibson, and Joe Gibson.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the First Christian Church or a charity of one’s choice.
