The clock is ticking down on the deadline for college students to apply for an internship this coming summer in Governor Ivey's Administration. Friday is the last day to apply for the program. The internship is a nine-week session, beginning June 2 and concluding July 31. Interns work a normal business week 8:00am until 5:00pm weekdays.

“As a former teacher, I know the value of hands-on learning, and this internship program gives Alabama students a front-row seat to how state government works,” Governor Ivey is quoted as saying in a press release. “Each summer, our interns bring fresh ideas, strong work ethic and a passion for serving our state, and I encourage any student interested in public service to apply before Friday’s deadline.”

One of the highest profile former interns to participate in the program is the recently elected University of Alabama Student Body President Samantha Simmons. The junior was selected for the program during the summer of 2024.

“Working for Governor Ivey and her team has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my college career." Simmons remembered. "I had the opportunity to intern in the Governor’s communications department, where I gained real-world experience every single day. From the moment you join the team, you’re trusted with meaningful work.

“I helped draft press releases, media advisories and social media content and contributed to a wide range of communications projects that supported the Governor’s Office."

Simmons was struck by the time staff invested in mentoring and ensuring interns were learning and growing throughout the experience.

Requirements for the internship program:

  • Must have a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Must have completed at least one semester before applying. Open to students in their freshman, sophomore, junior or senior year at a college or university
  • With your application, you must submit a resume, a cover letter and a writing sample. Writing samples can include any college essays, articles, or similar academic works that show off your writing capabilities.
