The former commander of Tuscaloosa's Violent Crimes Unit has announced his candidacy to become the next mayor of Northport.

Dale Phillips, who called himself a lifelong Northport resident and a 1984 graduate of Northside High, said he will seek the office of mayor in municipal elections on August 26th.

Phillips began his life wearing a badge at the University of Alabama Police Department before moving to the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office, where his retirement as commander of the VCU crowned a 30-year career in law enforcement.

He said he is currently working part-time for the Tuscaloosa County Park & Recreation Authority in youth sports.

Phillips said his grassroots campaign will focus on improving the city's relationships and its reputation, and governing in an honest, fiscally responsible way.

“I plan to bring fresh, common-sense leadership to the City of Northport — leadership that is transparent and accountable,” Phillips said. “I want to be your voice as we lead Northport into the future.”

Phillips has not served in elected office before, but has served on the Northport Planning & Zoning Commission.

He ran for mayor in 2020 and lost to Bobby Herndon, who later resigned without finishing his term. Incumbent Mayor John Hinton has not indicated if he will seek re-election.

Phillips has two adult sons, Ryan and Brad.

“I’m running for mayor because I believe in what this city and its people are capable of,” Phillips said. “And with the right approach to leadership I think we can make Northport an even better place to live.”
