A federal investigation is underway after a natural gas line explosively ruptured in Brookwood Wednesday night.

A spokesperson for the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office confirmed that deputies responded to multiple 911 calls about an explosion along Hannah Creek Road in Brookwood just a few minutes before midnight Wednesday.

TCSO notified the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and their agents are partnering with FBI investigators to take over the case.

Debris in the area may indicate the rupture was caused intentionally, according to a statement from the Department of Justice, which oversees the FBI.

The line is not far from Warrior Met Coal's No. 7 mine, where workers have been on strike for nearly a year over wages and benefits they believe are unfair.
