Elizabeth Jane Bradt (née Pease), 85, died peacefully at home surrounded by her family.

Elizabeth was born and raised in Baldwin, a small town on Long Island, New York. She attended Simmons College in Boston where she met her husband of 59 years, Richard “Dick” Bradt, who preceded her in death. After Dick graduated from M.I.T., the couple moved to the Chicago area where Elizabeth earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in library science at the University of Chicago.

Elizabeth and Dick moved from Chicago to upstate New York and then to Bellefonte, Pennsylvania where their two daughters were born: Meredith and Claire. The family lived in Seattle and Reno before Elizabeth and Dick settled in the Tuscaloosa area in 1994. Avid travelers, Elizabeth and Dick had been to every continent except Antarctica and just this past September, Elizabeth was on a tour of Greece for two weeks.

A person who felt strongly that her life should serve a useful purpose to society, Elizabeth had a long career at both university and public libraries, including the Tuscaloosa Public Library. Her connection to the Tuscaloosa library system continued after her retirement as a volunteer with the Friends of the Library. Elizabeth was also active as a volunteer with Meals on Wheels, Chamber Music Tuscaloosa, Home in Place and various groups through her church, First Presbyterian Church Tuscaloosa.

Elizabeth is survived by her daughters and three grandsons Jake, Sebastian and Arthur.

True to her conviction of serving others, Elizabeth donated her body to the UAB Anatomical Donor Program. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, October 29 at 11.00 at First Presbyterian Church Tuscaloosa.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Meals on Wheels of Tuscaloosa. Her family would like to express special thanks to Hospice of West Alabama and their wonderful nurses and aides.
