On arrival, officers found that the driver of the wrecked vehicle had been shot.

Taylor said the victim, a man, was transported to DCH Regional Medical Center for treatment. His condition was not known at 10 p.m. Thursday.

Taylor said TPD has the alleged shooter in custody, and the case going forward will be handled by the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit.

UPDATE: Taylor said the victim was transported and pronounced dead at DCH.

UPDATE, 1:30 a.m. Friday: Captain Marty Sellers, the co-commander of the VCU, has identified the victim killed Thursday night and said the alleged shooter has been charged with murder.

Sellers said the victim was 37-year-old Rufus Tyrone Carter IV, who had been shot several times before the accident that drew TPD to the scene around 7:30 Thursday evening.

Carter was transported to the hospital where he died, Sellers said.

While the VCU was processing the crime scene, 36-year-old Reginal Dawayne Peoples arrived at the Tuscaloosa Police Department and allegedly admitted to shooting Carter.

Sellers said the VCU continued to interview witnesses and process evidence before eventually charging Peoples with murder.

Peoples has been booked in the Tuscaloosa County Jail, where he is being held without bond in accordance with Aniya’s Law.

Both Peoples and Carter are Tuscaloosa residents.
