Saturday Severe Weather Outlook
The National Weather Service Birmingham reminds us that for all of Central Alabama there is the possibility of “strong to severe thunderstorms are possible across Central Alabama 3 am to 6 pm Saturday. Primary threats include damaging winds and a few tornadoes. Strong winds are possible outside of any thunderstorm activity late tonight through Saturday. Winds gusts up to 35 mph are possible.”
Timing
ABC 33/40 and Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa Chief Meteorologist James Spann provided us with more guidance on the timing. He commented that the “line of strong to severe storms will likely enter the northwest corner of Alabama around 3:00-5:00 a.m. tomorrow. The line should reach the Birmingham/Anniston/Gadsden/Tuscaloosa areas around 11:00-noon. Then, afternoon the line will move south of I-20, pushing into the southern counties by mid to late afternoon. The severe weather threat will is not as great for South Alabama as dynamic support will be weakening by then.”
Our Townsquare Media coverage areas should stay weather aware as we lead into this storm system. Our narrowed timeframe could be around 7 am until 1 pm. However, this could change depending on the activity of the system leading into Alabama.
Threats
Damaging winds up to 60 mph
A few tornadoes will be possible
Please be sure to know the difference between a tornado watch and a tornado warning. According to the NOAA National Severe Storms Laboratory, a Tornado Watch means that “weather conditions are favorable for tornadoes and severe weather.” A Tornado Warning means that a “tornado has been reported by spotters or indicated by radar and there is a serious threat to life and property to those in the path of the tornado.” A Tornado Warning truly means that “you should ACT NOW to find safe shelter.”
As warm as it will be today, Friday, December 10th. Saturday temperatures will fall to the 50s after this system passes through our area. The good news is that the weekend isn’t a total washout. Sunday will be sunny and cool with temperatures in the 60s.
Townsquare Media will bring you all necessary weather updates and we are prepared to carry wall-to-wall coverage with our Townsquare Media team and James Spann from ABC 33 40.
