Carl "Gene" Cornett died on Thursday, February 20th, 2025, at the age of 83.

Following his graduation from Holt High School Gene Cornett served in the US Air Force and later graduated from the University of Alabama.

He then became the first Parks and Recreation Director of the city of Gardendale, Alabama where he served from 1970 until 1975. He then went on to serve in the same position in Anniston, Alabama and Douglasville, Georgia until he retired to Gardendale.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Lucille Cornett, daughter Kerrie and son Wesley. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Bonnie Lockridge Cornett, son Jeff Cornett (Tracy), daughter, Krissy Cornett Hammond, sisters Judy McLaughlin (Johnny), and Dianne Donahue McCormack, 6 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, March 4, 202,5 at 12:00 noon at Hope Church (formerly Gardendale Mt Vernon Methodist) in Gardendale, Alabama. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Big Oak Ranch, 6000 Shelley Drive, Springville, Al 35146, or on the website at BigOak.org.
