A fast-growing car wash chain will soon replace a vacant gas station at the corner of a busy intersection in Northport.

Jeff Hogg, the president of the Northport City Council, took to Facebook Monday to announce that Hang 10 Car Wash is in the works for the corner of Highways 82 and 43 across the street from the Civic Center.

The Alabama Department of Transportation recently estimated that around 60,000 vehicles use the intersection daily and they are taking citizen input now on a long-term plan to improve traffic there.

Hogg said the car wash company acquired the property without being approached by the city, whose mayor and council often make first contact with restaurants and retailers looking for the next place to open a new location.

"I think that says a lot about the environment of being business-friendly and feeling like their specific business could be beneficial for our residents," Hogg said on social media.

The Hang 10 brand is new but fast-growing, with locations planned in Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Virginia, Florida, Alabama, Massachusetts and both Carolinas.

Obviously, a great deal of work will be required to transform the abandoned gas station on the site into a new standalone car wash, which will become the fourth such business on a stretch of Highway 82 north of the Black Warrior River, joining Red's Car Wash, Take 5 Car Wash and Marc-1 Car Wash.
