Birmingham Man Charged with Northport Murder, Others Sought

Police in Tuscaloosa County have charged a man with murder in connection to a targeted shooting in Northport's Northwood Lake neighborhood last month.

There have been no updates from the multi-agency Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit since Demetrius Damon Windham, Jr. was fatally shot outside his home in Northwood Lake on September 24th, except to say there was no broader danger to the public and they believe Windham's killer or killers sought him out specifically.

More than two weeks later, VCU commander Captain Jack Kennedy said investigating the killing has been a top priority for his team, and they were able to make an arrest Tuesday.

Kennedy said they have charged 40-year-old Antwaun Dewayne Pledger-Payton of Birmingham with murder for the killing.

Pledger-Payton is being held in the Tuscaloosa County Jail without bond pursuant to Aniah's Law.

Kennedy said the investigation is ongoing and the VCU is actively seeking several other persons of interest.

No other details were released Tuesday as the investigation continues.
