Organizations Partner on Anchor Tuscaloosa Initiative to Keep Graduates Local
Know a college student in Tuscaloosa? A trio of local agencies are partnering with a statewide organization to launch a free program to keep young professionals in Tuscaloosa long after they earn their degrees.
The initiative will be called Anchor Tuscaloosa, which was born out of a collaboration between the statewide Fuel Alabama program and the Tuscaloosa County Economic Development Authority, The Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama and Visit Tuscaloosa.

In a Tuesday press release, the TCEDA said Anchor Tuscaloosa will aim to demonstrate that West Alabama is a dynamic, rewarding place for young professionals to live and work for the long term.
This initiative will treat a group of college students to five sessions next spring meant to build community and introduce them to the sides of this area they may not encounter on campus.
The program is free and available for up to 40 qualified undergraduate and graduate students at not only the University of Alabama but also Stillman College and Shelton State Community College who have completed at least 30 hours of credit before December 31, 2024.
Sessions will include a local "staycation," meetings with local and statewide elected officials, introductions to business leaders, and a sharp focus on the quality of the Tuscaloosa-area community.
“In partnership with many organizations, and our local government entities, we understand how important it is that we interact with our college students in a meaningful way to connect them to our community,” said Justice Smyth, executive director for the Tuscaloosa County Economic Development Authority. “This program will empower us to engage with students who have a keen interest in locating here post-graduation. We’re excited to showcase why Tuscaloosa County is a vibrant place to live and work.”
Applications are open now and will be accepted until December 1st, 2024. Chose participants will be notified by December 20, 2024.
