Four Memorial Day Traffic Fatalities Kick Off Summer Driving
The summer driving season unofficially got under way this past Monday and by the amount of traffic on the roads, it looks like our nation's highways will be busy until school starts back.
The vacation season got off to a deadly start in Alabama with ALEA Trooper report four traffic fatalities. Between Friday, May 22 and midnight this past Monday, fatal crashes occurred in Pickens, Colbert, Shelby and Elmore counties.

“Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones affected by these tragic losses,” ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor said in a media statement. “Each fatality is a heartbreaking reminder that a single decision on the roadway or waterway can have life-altering consequences.”
Those fatal crashes have put an exclamation mark behind ALEA's annual "101 Days of Summer Safety" campaign for this year. The goal is to protect lives on Alabama’s highways, waterways and beaches when safety may get overshadowed by having fun.
This year’s campaign carries a patriotic theme as the nation celebrates 250 years of America's independence, reminding citizens that freedom comes with responsibility, especially when it comes to keeping families and communities safe.
ALEA issued a safety checklist as part of the summer-long campaign:
On the Road:
• Buckle up — every seat, every trip.
• Never drive distracted.
• Slow down and obey posted speed limits.
• Never drive impaired or under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
• Move over for emergency and law enforcement vehicles.
• Avoid aggressive driving and remain patient during heavy holiday traffic.
• Ensure children are properly secured in age-appropriate car seats.
On the Water:
• Always wear a properly fitted life jacket.
• Never boat under the influence.
• Check weather conditions before heading out.
• File a float plan and let someone know your destination.
• Keep proper safety equipment onboard.
• Stay alert for swimmers and other vessels.
• Operators should complete a boating safety course.
This summer's campaign will include increased emphasis on speeding, impaired driving, seat belt use, and distracted driving.
