The Alabama Department of Transportation has an informal come-and-go public information meeting scheduled between 5:00 and 7:00pm this Thursday at Greensboro City Hall (1101 Main Street). The state highway agency will be describing their long-awaited plan to resurface and rework Alabama Highway 14 in southern Hale County.

A flyer from ALDOT shows the project will run from West of Holbrook Place to AL-61 through Greensboro. It will include a road diet from four travel lanes to two travel lanes and a two-way center turn lane from Main Street to Tuscaloosa Street.

A "road diet" is a roadway reconfiguration designed to improve safety, manage traffic flow, and enhance the overall quality of life on a street or highway according to the Federal Highway Administration.

The reworking of the road will allow for the separation of thru traffic and designated space for left-turn movements. It will also provide for improved sight lines for the left-turn movements at the intersection of AL-14 and Demopolis Street. In addition, striping changes are proposed at the intersection of AL-14 and Hobson Street to more clearly delineate right-of-way at the intersection.

"The traffic count on the road showed some 7,000 vehicles use that roadway daily," ALDOT spokesman John McWilliams said, describing the ned for the roadwork. "With the road diet, we’re reconfiguring the roadway to three lanes. So, you’ll have a through traffic lane in each direction and then a center left turn lane in the middle." McWilliams says it will enhance safety for vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians.
