Alabama Governor Kay Ivey has been released from the hospital after a short stay to have fluid removed near her lungs. The governor's press office has confirmed the 81-year-old chief executive returned to the Alabama Governor’s Mansion this afternoon after a two-day stay at Baptist Medical Center South in Montgomery.

After several weeks of pain and discomfort, Ivey underwent the "minor" medical procedure at the recommendation of her personal physician and medical staff at the hospital.

The governor's communications director Gina Maiola says the governor underwent a short procedure to drain the fluid pressing on her lungs and then spent two nights at the hospital. The governor remained engaged as the Legislature continues in session and was able to keep up with other regular business and current events.

Although Ivey must be monitored closely for any complications, the medical procedure is a relatively simple one and takes only 15 to 20 minutes to perform according to the Johns Hopkins Medical website.

“Governor Ivey thanks the doctors, nurses and staff at Baptist South for their capable, efficient and professional work. The governor is also extremely grateful to the people of Alabama for their outpouring of support. She is thankful for their prayers and enjoyed their many messages of well-wishes.” -- Statement from Gov. Ivey's office following her hospital release

Awaiting Ivey's recovery are several bills that have been passed by the legislature and await her signature. Her office says the governor is planning to work from the mansion through the weekend “and looks forward to being back at the Capitol next week.”

Ivey has served in several state elective positions and is in her 10th and final year of her administration.
