16 Days Away From Bama Kickoff: Richard Mullaney
Each day counting down to Alabama's Week 1 matchup with Utah State, I will highlight a former player whose jersey number coincides with the amount of days until the game. Bama takes the field in only 16 days, so let's look back at Crimson Tide wideout Richard Mullaney.
Richard Mullaney didn't suit up for the Crimson Tide for long, but made his impact felt in the short time he was with the team. A transfer from Oregon State, Mullaney came to Tuscaloosa in 2015 and joined a wide receiving corps headlined by ArDarius Stewart and Robert Foster that also featured a freshman Calvin Ridley.
While he was likely the lowest rated recruit in the room, Mullaney worked his way into the rotation by being a consistent target with sure hands and buying into the Nick Saban philosophy. In his lone season as a graduate transfer, the Thousand Oaks, CA native appeared in all 15 of the Tide's games and hauled in 38 passes for nearly 400 yards, ranking fourth on the team.
He helped Alabama return to the College Football Playoff and was a key contributor in its games against Michigan State and Clemson, catching four passes for nearly 100 yards.
After his time with the Tide, Mullaney went undrafted in 2016 and signed with the Houston Texans as a free agent, but was waived before the start of the season. He saw brief stints with the Cowboys and Browns as well, but was also waived before the season.
In 2018, Mullaney joined the AAF's Arizona Hotshots, but the league folded before the conclusion of its inaugural year. He joined the D.C. Defenders of the XFL in 2020, but once more, the alternate league folded, this time due to COVID-19.
Now, Mullaney resides in his hometown of Thousand Oaks and serves as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Thousand Oaks High School.
