1 Shot and Killed in Tuscaloosa County Early Saturday Morning
A 51-year-old man was shot and killed Saturday in what may have been self-defense. No criminal charges have been filed in the wake of the homicide.
Captain Marty Sellers, the co-commander of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, alerted media outlets of the shooting around 4 a.m. Saturday.
Sellers said the sheriff's office and VCU were called to the scene of a shooting in the 2000 block of Stardust Drive in Hillcrest Saturday.
In a 7 a.m. update, Sellers said the shooting may have been in self-defense. He said police discovered two men shot on Stardust Drive.
A 23-year-old was injured and the second male, later identified as Reggie Coverson, a 51-year-old Tuscaloosa resident, was deceased on the scene.
Sellers said a 36-year-old told deputies that the older man was the aggressor and he instigated the violence when he shot the 23-year-old, who survived.
The 36-year-old then fatally shot Coverson. Sellers said multiple witnesses corroborated the story and no charges have been filed at this time.
Sellers said the case will be presented to the Tuscaloosa County Grand Jury to determine if any crime was committed.
The 23-year-old is in stable condition as he continues to be treated for his injuries, police say.
