A woman was killed in a Monday afternoon house fire in Coaling, the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit announced Tuesday morning.

Jack Kennedy, the VCU's commander, said firefighters were called to the 19000 Block of West Manor Drive in Coaling on reports of a house on fire there.

Kennedy said the first responders were told that the woman who owns the home may have been inside at the time it caught fire, and they eventually discovered a deceased person upon entering the remains of the home.

Kennedy said the victim in this case was known to smoke cigarettes in bed, and at this time the working theory is that this was an accidental fire with tragic consequences.

Still, the VCU investigates all unnatural deaths in Tuscaloosa County and will work with the State Fire Marshal's office to definitively determine what happened and led to this loss of life.

Kennedy said the fire was fought but the Coaling Fire department and the Tuscaloosa Fire Rescue service.
