A woman is dead after falling from the Paul Bryant Bridge on State Route 297 in Tuscaloosa Friday night, police sources have confirmed to the Tuscaloosa Thread.

Stephanie Taylor, a spokeswoman for the Tuscaloosa Police Department, said two drivers on the road called police around 5:45 p.m. Friday to report a person standing by the guard rails of the bridge's northbound lanes.

Officers were dispatched to the scene, but the woman had fallen by the time they arrived in the area.

Taylor said the victim fell to the road below, not into the Black Warrior RIver, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

TPD has turned the case over to the multi-agency Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, a team of detectives from TPD, the Northport Police Department, University of Alabama Police Department and the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office.

The VCU investigates all unnatural deaths in the county, and their presence and involvement does not necessarily indicate foul play is suspected in a case.
