Support for the arts goes all the way back to the founding of our nation. There was no bigger backer than our first president, George Washington.

“To encourage literature and the arts is a duty which every good citizen owes to his country,” Washington wrote in a letter to the Marquis de Lafayette on May 28, 1788. He consistently emphasized how the arts, sciences, and literature would make the new nation a better place to live.

Alabama is taking Washington's advice by investing millions of dollars annually to maintain an active state arts agency and funding programs in communities across the state.

The Alabama State Council on the Arts is continuing that effort by awarding $3.9 million to support arts and creativity in Alabama. Of the 200 local organizations receiving funds across the state, two dozen are in West Alabama.

The funding will go towards assisting a variety of different programs. From theatre productions, festivals, and concert series to administrative support, exhibitions, and after-school arts programs.
