Mere mention of a person's name in the government-released files of convicted human trafficker Jeffrey Epstein can lead to hate mail, threats, and instant association with his crimes. Just knowing someone does not automatically mean complicity.

That is a problem a University of Alabama alum and his family are dealing with since their name appeared numerous times in the files released by the U.S. Justice Department.

Messages between Epstein and his personal psychologist, Dr. Stephen Richard Alexander, are a small part of the millions of files released. The messages mainly deal with Alexander attempting to use Epstein's myriad connections with powerful people and organizations to assist his son in securing a job. The first dates back to 2009, which is after Epstein's 2008 conviction for soliciting prostitution.

A friendly relationship between Alexander and Epstein is reflected in the more than 700 messages, most dealing with Alexander's son John. One such group of messages concerned Epstein assisting with providing a speaker for one of John's classes at UA. He was also invited to attend John's graduation. There is no indication that he did.

Following his son John's graduation with a degree in restaurant, hotel and meetings management from UA in 2013, Alexander asked Epstein for help in finding him a job, particularly one in Las Vegas. Epstein responded that it would not be a problem and named several possibilities.

How and when Dr. Alexander and the disgraced financier met is not clear, but it is known that Alexander ran a clinical and forensic psychology clinic in West Palm Beach, Florida before he retired in 2023. The clinic is not far from Epstein's Palm beach estate, one of the locations he was accused of using to assault young girls.

Contact between the Alexanders and Epstein did not encompass just the younger Alexander's schooling and graduation. In 2011, a message to Epstein from the doctor requested a ride in Epstein's helicopter. Later Alexander thanked Epstein for helping John impress his girlfriend.

Before Christmas later in 2011, Alexander asked Epstein if he could see him and introduce his son to him while the family was on a cruise past Epstein's infamous island. After the visit, Alexander messaged Epstein that they had a good time. he also included a cryptic notation that it would be best to keep the guest list secret.

Later communication between Alexander and Epstein basically deals with the doctor asking for the financier's advice in handling debts and paying for John's tuition.

None of the communication presents any evidence that Alexander or his son knew of the illegal sexual operations Epstein was involved with but neither they nor UA have been willing to discuss their relationship with Epstein.
