A New Era For Leadership Development Coming At UA
Leadership: The ability to influence and guide a group toward a common goal through skills like communication, empathy and strategic vision. There are many these days who believe there is a dearth pf leadership in this country. The University of Alabama is planning to build on its history of developing leaders.
The UA Board of Trustees has approved the creation of the School of Leadership and Policy. A press release from UA states the programs intent is to, "...build on the Capstone's storied history of educating effective civic leaders and policy makers who have shaped the state of Alabama and the nation."

"The University of Alabama's new School of Leadership and Policy will instill the qualities of ethical leadership, innovative thinking and evidence-based policymaking to shape the trajectory of communities across Alabama and the United States," UA President Peter J. Mohler was quoted as saying in the release.
U.S Marine Corps icon, Lt. Gen. Lewis "Chesty" Pullar once famously said, "Leaders can be and are made.” President Mohler's comments followed in that vein, "By cultivating leadership talents and policy expertise, the School of Leadership and Policy will serve as a catalyst for developing the next generation of changemakers -- those who will lead Alabama and the nation toward a prosperous and resilient future."
The new school will provide interdisciplinary, proactive-oriented education that prepares students of all backgrounds to become effective leaders, policymakers and public servants who will contribute to Alabama's and the country's social, economic and civic well-being the press release stated.
One of the critical aspects of leadership and policymaking is to be exposed to multiple viewpoints and have an understanding of the foundations of American democracy according to UA System Chancellor Sid J. Trant. Included in that are interrelationships with public institutions, nonprofit organization and the private sector accomplished through internships, policy labs, and community-based projects that will assist the student in gaining perspective, skills and insight into challenges that impact society at all levels.
The first class is expected to be recruited during the fall of 2026 and spring of 2027 with classes for the undergraduate and graduate degrees beginning in the fall of 2027. Between now and then UA will search for a dean, obtain approvals for the new school, establish organizational structure, and obtain degree approvals.
